Compression Therapy

What Is Normatec®

Compression Therapy?

Normatec® is a leader in compression therapy, commonly used by chiropractors and physical therapists, often as relief following sports-related activities. Many high-level athletes, trainers, and fitness enthusiasts use Normatec® technology to relieve pain, speed recovery times, and boost performance.

How Does Normatec®

Compression Therapy Work?

Like massage, the treatment increases blood flow to areas compressed by separate attachments that can go on the legs, hips, and/or arms. Compressed air massages the limbs using a pulsing pattern that mirrors how the muscles pump. By moving fluid away from the limbs to the core, compression flushes out pain-inducing metabolic wastes, such as lactic acid and carbon dioxide. Another positive outcome is that the body delivers more oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to the “squeezed” areas.

Benefits may include:

  • Decreased muscle fatigue and tension relief
  • Faster recovery times
  • Reduced swelling and inflammation
  • Increased flexibility and range of motion
  • Prevention of delayed-onset muscle soreness and aches

What Will I Experience During Normatec® Treatment?

During treatment—which typically lasts about 30 minutes—your legs and/or arms will be inserted into the compression sleeves or boots. These will inflate and adjust to your limbs to compress the muscles. Your limbs will then be pulsed in intervals, with patterns that move the compression systematically upward in sections—in boots from the foot to the hip; in sleeves from the hand to the shoulder. Throughout the treatment, each muscle group is carefully massaged in a pattern of sequential compressions. The pressure and duration of the treatment can be controlled as needed.
